Nafplion or Nauplion is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was the first capital of modern Greece, from 1829 to 1834.

Nafplio or Anapli is a town in the Peloponnese and the capital of the Prefecture of Argolis. It is one of the most picturesque towns in Greece, while it was once the capital of the Greek state, between 1828 and 1833.Nafplio is known for Bourtzi, a small fortress built on an islet in the middle of the port, Palamidi, a Venetian fortress that towers over the town, and Akronauplia, another Venetian fortress built on the same-named peninsula. It is also the place where the first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated.

According to Greek mythology, Nafplios established Nafplia at the location where the current town stands. Nafplia was fortified with Cyclopean walls. Archaeological findings attest that the city had stood at the place as early as the Mycenaean era.Nafplio is a popular destination for Athenians and Pelopennesians, as it is located close to both these areas. Some of the town’s more splendid buildings include the Armansperg Mansion (the residence of the Regent of Greece Joseph Louis Armansperg), as well as the Archaeological Museum on Syntagma Square. An annex of the National Art Gallery also operates in the town.
